"Best American Poetry" Guest Editor Apologizes For "Pseudonym Bullshit"

Michael Derrick Hudson

poetryfoundation.org

The poetry world was shocked to learn earlier this week that Michael Derrick Hudson was published in an influential anthology under an Asian pseudonym. The poet said he used the name “Yi-Fen Chou” as a “strategy” to increase his chances of getting his poems published in The Best American Poetry 2015.

On Monday, Sherman Alexie, the anthology's guest editor, defended his decision to publish the poem even after learning the true identity of Yi-Fen Chou. Alexie stated that he paid attention to Hudson’s poetry because of who he thought the poet was.

“I’m a brown-skinned poet who gave a better chance to another supposed brown-skinned poet because of our brownness,” he said in a blog post.

After the revelation, many poets voiced concerns over the decision.

On Tuesday, Alexie emailed the other poets in the anthology, apologizing for the "Pseudonym Bullshit."

BuzzFeed News has reached out to the series editor for comment.

Read the full email, obtained by BuzzFeed News, below:

Dear Best American Poets,

I am sorry to send this as a group message but I wanted to reach you all at the same time.

I am sorry that this Pseudonym Bullshit has taken so much attention away from all of your great poems. I have been re-reading the anthology all day and I have been transported, again and again, to that wonderful moment when I first read each of them.

I still believe—I know—this year's Best American Poetry is a revolutionary celebration of poetic talent and diversity. And I hope this controversy soon fades and your poems will rise and be as celebrated as they should be.

And, yes, I respect those of you who might disagree with my decision to keep the poem in the anthology. And I understand why you might want to disassociate yourself from the anthology and from me.

I will continue to be a fan of all of you wonderful poets regardless of how you feel about this damn mess. And I will continue to be your fan regardless of any public or private opinions you need to express.

It comes to this: I love your poems—all of them—and I am honored to share this anthology with you.

Sincerely,

Sherman Alexie

Here's Everything We Know About "Game Of Thrones" Season 6 (So Far)

If you don’t want to know anything about the next season, it’s probably best you stop here!

Ian McShane will play...someone!

Ian McShane will play...someone!

As the show has more or less caught up with the books the showrunners are keeping their cards closer to their chests than ever before – every casting announcement could give away huge spoilers ahead of both Season 6 and the release of The Winds of Winter. It's therefore not especially surprising that it hasn't yet been announced who the Deadwood star will play.

According to Entertainment Weekly, McShane has a "relatively small amount of screen-time during the season, yet his character is of key importance." Make of that what you will.

The most commonly held opinion is that McShane will play Randyll Tarly, Sam's dad, who we'll meet once Sam arrives at the Citadel. Some suggested he would be playing Theon's uncle, Euron Greyjoy, but...

ASOIAF readers will know that the Iron Islands storyline is possibly the one most overlooked in the show so far, but that could be about to change. After a casting call for a pirate-like character went out earlier in the summer Euron's appearance seemed inevitable, then last week HBO confirmed that Borgen star Pilou Asbæk would be assuming the role.

In the books Euron Greyjoy (Theon and Yara's uncle) captains a ship whose entire crew are mute thanks to Euron ripping out their tongues – just in case you were wondering what type of character he'll be...

Theon is going home!

Theon is going home!

Given they've barely been mentioned in two seasons, there were suggestions that the thing that would take our attention back to the Iron Islands would be newly free Theon/Reek heading back to his homeland, and now this seems all but confirmed.

Thrones blog Watchers on the Wall claims that Alfie Allen has been spotted by multiple sources filming alongside the Ironborn, including his sister Yara and uncle Euron.

Below is a photo uploaded by the Red Door Tea Room in Ballintoy, showing that Theon and Yara are very much back together.

"Game Of Thrones" Casts "Unreal" Star As Sam's Brother

Freddie Stroma has landed the role of Samwell’s brother in the sixth season of HBO’s drama.

Lifetime

HBO

Hot off his role on Lifetime's Unreal, BuzzFeed News has confirmed that Freddie Stroma will be playing Samwell Tarly's (John Bradley) brother, Dickon Tarly, in the upcoming sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones.

Stroma played Adam Cromwell, the morally questionable bachelor on Lifetime's acclaimed drama, and Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter films.

In George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, readers have only heard about Sam's brother, Dickon. Their father, Lord Randyll Tarly, deemed Sam unworthy to be his direct heir, choosing the younger Dickon instead and sending Sam to the Wall.

And given the events in the Season 5 finale, it looks like things might go from bad to worse for the Eeyore of Westeros.
