25 Quotes About Animals That Will Make You A Better Human

“For the animal shall not be measured by man.”

1. "If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."―James Herriot

2. "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." ― Anatole France

3. "You think those dogs will not be in heaven! I tell you they will be there long before any of us." ― Robert Louis Stevenson

4. "We patronize the animals for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they are more finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other Nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth." ― Henry Beston

5. "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." ― Alice Walker

6. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." ― Mahatma Gandhi

7. "An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language." ― Martin Buber

8. "I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self contained;

I stand and look at them long and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition;

They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins;

They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;

Not one is dissatisfied-not one is demented with the mania of owning things;

Not one kneels to another, nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago;

Not one is responsible or industrious over the whole earth." ― Walt Whitman

Peter J. Cohen’s collection of photographs depicting women smoking cigars, shooting rifles, and other “unladylike” activities will be released as a photography book later this month.

What does a "dangerous woman" look like?

What does a "dangerous woman" look like?

Rizzoli Books

After over a decade of rifling through flea market boxes and garage sales, art collector Peter J. Cohen may have the answer. From his search, Cohen ended up with thousands of vintage photographs dating from the early to mid-twentieth century. Many images revealed women riding rodeo horses, sporting men's coats, and slugging down beers in the most "unladylike fashion" for the time period they were taken in. Coincidentally, Cohen had also been searching for a suitable Christmas present for his sister. "For some unknown reason, the images that I had already collected suggested themselves to me as a tribute to my sister's independent spirit and energy," Cohen told BuzzFeed News.

Over 150 images of these gun-toting and cigar-smoking women were brought together to become the photography book: Snapshots Of Dangerous Women .

So what does a dangerous women look like? Maybe she dresses in men's clothing, smokes a pack a day, or swears like a sailor. As the book's introduction reads, "She's a tough dame, an adventuress; harridan, daredevil, badass."

Hesburgh Libraries University of Notre Dame

Now University of Notre Dame conservators are awaiting results about whether a book in their collection was made using human skin.

Last year Harvard conservators confirmed a book in their library was made of human skin after scientists tested the binding, and other surviving books have periodically surfaced.

Though the Notre Dame copy's history is unclear, the book has been a highlight on the library's Special Collections tour for so long that researchers decided to send a sample to the New York City Medical Examiner's office.

The annotations about the book's potential origins can be seen in this photograph.
